Handset sales could slump through high SIM only demand

It has been claimed in a recent report that the high demand for SIM only deals expected in 2012 could result in a slump in handset sales in the UK.

Whilst the number of handsets available has been rising over the past year, with a variety of new and exciting handsets and smart phones hitting the shelves from a range of manufacturers, 2012 may not be a particularly fruitful year for the mobile handset market according to a recent report.

It is claimed that in the current financial climate, where people continue to try and find ways to reduce their spending and outgoings including the amount that they spend on their mobile phone usage, SIM only deals are likely to become increasingly popular over the coming year.

With this in mind, some experts believe that handset sales could experience a slump, as more and more consumers favour SIM only plans over a contract that comes with a new handset or the purchase of a new phone. Figures from Ofcom have suggested that the smart phone boom is expected to fizzle out as saturation levels have already been reached.

One mobile industry expert said that the days of continual upgrades on handsets is over for many consumers, who now realize that they can save money by keeping their existing handset and simply opting for a SIM only plan. Another reason that experts believe the mobile handset may experience a slump in 2012 is due to consumers deciding to wait it out for 4G technology and handsets to hit the market.
