Your current mobile phone contract is about to expire, but you’re unhappy with the service they provide. You don’t want to sign another contract with them, but also don’t want to switch to another company that will force you to accept a free handset and sign an expensive, long-term contract. What can you do?
The answer is simple. You can choose a sim only deal. There are many cheap SIM only deals out there, which are good alternatives to signing a lengthy contract with a company that you may not be satisfied with after signing.

If you aren’t familiar with SIM only deals, you may be pleasantly surprised at how they work. Rather than signing a long-term contract with a mobile phone company and getting a free handset, you use your current handset and only commit to that company for 30-days. At the end of the month, you can continue with that company or, if you are unhappy, switch to another company without any charges or penalties. You do not receive a free phone when signing up for a sim only deal; however, as the saying goes, “nothing in life is free.” You pay for that free phone over the course of your lengthy contract, with high monthly bills.

In addition to saving you money, another advantage of keeping your current handset is that you don’t have to contact all of your friends and family with a new phone number because you keep your old number along with your phone.

In order to be able to use your old phone with the new provider, you will receive a new sim card, which will allow you to connect to that company’s mobile network. If you are not familiar with sim cards, it is a small memory card that contains the necessary information to allow the mobile user access to the mobile network. A SIM card is specific to the company issuing it; therefore, if you switch companies, you will need a new sim card. You simply remove your old card and replace it with the new one. If your handset is linked to your old network, you may need to get your handset unlocked, which is relatively easy with information found on the internet.

Even some of the cheapest SIM only deals usually offer the same great benefits as those offered with long-term contracts, such as unlimited internet access, free video calling or social networking access. Some sim only deals offer a pay-as-you-go option and will give you bonuses, such as free calls to UK landlines or a certain number of international minutes each month.

If you don’t already have a mobile phone, are you then forced to sign a long-term contract in order to get one? The answer is no. You can buy an inexpensive mobile on the internet or at a shop, or even ask your family and friends if they have an old mobile tucked away in a drawer at home. Chances are they do!

Remember, the cheapest sim only deal may not necessarily be the best deal for you. If you don’t send text messages, then you don’t need a deal that offers unlimited texting. If you use your mobile a lot, then don’t choose a plan that offers a small number of minutes each month because you will have to pay for any minutes used over your allotted amount. So decide what features you need from your mobile service, do your research, and sign on with sim only deal that best suits your needs.
